Rwanda Visa Guide: Everything You Need to Know (2026)
Getting a visa to Rwanda is one of the easiest bureaucratic experiences in all of Africa. Rwanda has one of the most open visa policies on the continent — since 2018, citizens of every country in the world can receive a visa on arrival at Kigali International Airport and at all land borders. No embassy appointment, no advance application required, no long waiting period.
That said, there are important distinctions depending on your nationality. Some travellers get in for free. Others pay $50. Some get 30 days, others 90. And if you are planning to combine Rwanda with Uganda or Kenya, the East Africa Tourist Visa changes the equation entirely.
I am Rwandan, and I have watched thousands of visitors land at Kigali airport with a mix of excitement and mild anxiety about the entry process. This guide covers everything clearly so you land knowing exactly what to expect.
Who Needs a Visa for Rwanda?
Technically, everyone needs some form of entry permission to visit Rwanda. But depending on your nationality, that permission may be free, discounted, or already arranged by your regional membership.
There are four main categories:
- Visa-free entry (EAC citizens): Citizens of Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, South Sudan, and Burundi — all members of the East African Community — enter Rwanda completely free of charge and may stay for up to 6 months. Ugandans and Kenyans can also enter using a valid national ID card instead of a passport.
- Free visa on arrival (AU, Commonwealth, La Francophonie members): Citizens of African Union, Commonwealth, and La Francophonie member states receive a free 30-day visa on arrival. This covers a large number of countries across Africa, the Caribbean, the Pacific, and parts of Europe and Asia. The list includes the UK, Canada, India, Australia, South Africa, Nigeria, France, and many more.
- Free 90-day visa on arrival (specific bilateral agreements): Citizens of Angola, Benin, Central African Republic, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, DRC, Ghana, Guinea, Haiti, Indonesia, Mauritius, Philippines, Qatar, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Singapore, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Saint Christopher and Nevis receive a free 90-day visa on arrival.
- Paid visa on arrival / eVisa (all other nationalities): Citizens of all other countries — including the United States, Germany, Japan, China, Brazil, and most of Europe — receive a 30-day single-entry tourist visa on arrival for USD $50. These visitors also have the option to apply for an eVisa online before travelling.

How to Get Your Rwanda eVisa Online (Step by Step)
Applying for an eVisa before you travel is optional for most nationalities , you can still get your visa on arrival at the airport , but applying online has a few advantages: you avoid the queue at the immigration desk, you have your approval confirmed before boarding, and you can pay in advance.
Step 1: Go to the official Rwanda immigration portal
Visit irembo.gov.rw , this is Rwanda’s official government service portal. Do not use any third-party visa application sites that charge extra fees. The Rwandan government does not authorise any external agents to apply on your behalf, and such sites will charge you more than the official fee.
Step 2: Create an account and start your application
Register with your email address. Select “Tourist Visa” from the visa categories.
Step 3: Fill in your personal details
Enter your full name exactly as it appears on your passport, your nationality, date of birth, passport number, and travel dates. Upload a scanned copy of your passport biographical page , it must be clearly legible.
Step 4: Upload a passport photo
This must be a recent colour photo with a white background, full face visible, no hats or sunglasses.
Step 5: Pay the fee
USD $50 by credit or debit card. The fee is non-refundable.
Step 6: Receive your approval
Processing typically takes 3 working days or less. You will receive an approved eVisa by email. Print it or save it to your phone , you will present it on arrival.
Step 7: Present at the border
Show your eVisa, valid passport, and any supporting documents requested (return flight ticket, hotel booking, proof of sufficient funds). Immigration officers may ask for these but rarely do in practice for tourist visas.
The East Africa Tourist Visa — One Visa for Three Countries
If your itinerary includes Rwanda and Uganda, or Rwanda and Kenya, the East Africa Tourist Visa (EATV) is worth serious consideration.
For USD $100 — just $50 more than a standard Rwanda visa — the EATV gives you:
- Multiple entry access to Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya
- 90-day validity across all three countries
- Freedom to cross between the three countries without applying for additional visas
This is particularly popular for travellers combining gorilla trekking in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park with gorilla trekking in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, or with a Kenyan safari.
Important rule: If you apply for the EATV before travelling, your first entry point must be the country through which you applied. If you apply through Rwanda’s portal, you must enter Rwanda first. If you apply through Uganda’s portal, you must enter Uganda first.
How to apply: Go to irembo.gov.rw/rolportal/web/dgie/east-africa-tourist-visa and follow the same process as a standard eVisa.
Who is eligible: Most nationalities are eligible. Check the current list on the irembo portal, as eligibility can change.
Note: The EATV does not currently include Tanzania. If your itinerary extends to Tanzania, you will need a separate Tanzanian visa.
Entry Requirements at the Border
Whether you are arriving by air at Kigali International Airport or crossing a land border, the following documents apply:
- Valid passport with at least 6 months validity remaining beyond your intended departure date from Rwanda
- At least one blank visa page in your passport
- Your eVisa approval (if you applied online) — or be prepared to pay $50 at the immigration desk
- Proof of sufficient funds for your stay (immigration officers may ask but rarely do for short tourist visits)
- Return flight ticket or onward travel confirmation
- Yellow fever vaccination: If you are arriving from a country on Rwanda’s list of yellow fever-endemic nations, you must present proof of yellow fever vaccination. A valid yellow fever certificate should be in date.
- Travel insurance: Rwanda has made travel insurance mandatory for all tourists entering the country. Ensure your policy covers emergency medical treatment and evacuation and is valid for the full duration of your stay.
- Plastic bags: Rwanda bans single-use plastic bags. They will be confiscated at the airport, even inside your luggage.
Extending Your Rwanda Visa
If you need to stay longer than your initial visa allows, extensions can be applied for at the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration offices in Kigali, before your current visa expires. Applications for extension should be submitted while your initial visa remains valid — do not wait until it has lapsed.
Practical Money Tips at the Border
Rwanda’s immigration desks at Kigali airport accept US dollars in cash for visa payments. Have the exact amount ready — $50 for a standard tourist visa. Large denomination notes (like $100 bills) may or may not be broken. Arriving with exact change is the smoothest approach.
If you applied online and already have your eVisa, you simply present the document and proceed. No additional payment is needed at the desk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a visa to visit Rwanda from the UK?
UK citizens receive a free 30-day visa on arrival as members of the Commonwealth. No advance application is needed. Simply present your valid passport at the airport.
Do Americans need a visa for Rwanda?
Yes. US citizens need a visa, which costs USD $50 on arrival or can be applied for online. The US also has a long-term visa option available through the Rwanda Embassy in Washington D.C. — a multi-year multiple-entry visa for frequent visitors costs USD $160.
Can I get a Rwanda visa at the land border?
Yes. Visas are issued at all official land border crossings, not just at Kigali airport. This includes the borders with Uganda (Katuna/Gatuna, Cyanika), Tanzania (Rusumo), and other crossings. Standard fees and requirements apply.
How long can I stay in Rwanda on a tourist visa?
The standard tourist visa grants 30 days. EAC citizens may stay up to 6 months. The EATV and multiple-entry visas are valid for 90 days. Extensions can be applied for from within Rwanda.
Is Rwanda visa-free for Indians?
India is a Commonwealth member, so Indian passport holders receive a free 30-day visa on arrival. No advance application is needed.
Is Rwanda visa-free for Nigerians?
Nigeria is both an African Union and Commonwealth member, so Nigerian passport holders receive a free 30-day visa on arrival.
What is the Rwanda eVisa processing time?
Typically 3 working days. Apply at least a week before travel to allow buffer time for any queries.
Can I work or study on a tourist visa?
No. Tourist and conference visas are strictly for tourism and short visits. Working or studying in Rwanda requires separate permits issued by the Rwandan government.
Is the Rwanda border with Burundi open?
As of early 2024, the Rwanda-Burundi land border has been closed. Check current status closer to your travel date if your itinerary involves this crossing.
One Last Thing
Rwanda’s visa process is genuinely one of the most straightforward in Africa. Most visitors walk through Kigali airport’s immigration hall in under 15 minutes. The officers are professional, the facilities are clean, and the process rarely produces surprises if your documents are in order.
Get your passport validity checked, confirm your yellow fever vaccination status, have your $50 ready if you need it, and go.
